The purpose of the thesis Prize of Université PSL is to reward and promote the best doctoral work in five Humanities and Social Sciences fields:

  • Art Aesthetics Literature 
  • Law, economics, management
  • Humanities
  • Science / Humanities Interfaces
  • Social Sciences

Nearly 300 applications were submitted by young PhDs from French and international universities.

On May 13, the jury rewarded the following 5 laureates:

Social Sciences Prize

  • Simon BITTMANN : « Des loan sharks aux banques. Croisades, construction et segmentation d’un marché du crédit aux Etats-Unis, 1900-1945 »sous la direction de Claire Lemercier et Marion Fourcade, Institut d’Etudes Politiques (SciencesPo), Paris.

Law, economics, management Prize

  • Chris RODRIGUEZ : « Les procès des Acta Alexandrinorum : une vision des vaincus sur les relations entre Alexandrie et Rome aux deux premiers siècles de notre ère »sous la direction de Jean-Pierre Coriat, Université Panthéon-Assas Paris II.

Art Aesthetics Literature Prize

  • Sarah BENHAIM : « Aux marges du bruit. Une étude de la musique noise et du Do it Yourself », sous la direction d’Esteban Buch et Philippe Le Guern, EHESS (Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales).

Humanities Prize

  • Sandro PASSAVANTI : « Délire et pathologie de la perception dans l’Antiquité classique. Littérature, philosophie, médecine », sous la direction de Philippe Hoffmann, EPHE (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes), Fondazione San Carlo Modène.

Science/Humanities Interfaces Prize

  • Elodie GROSSI : « Bad Brains : Race et psychiatrie de la fin de l’esclavage à l’époque contemporaine aux États-Unis », sous la direction de Dominique Vidal et Paul Schor, Université Paris Diderot.

Each laureate will receive a prize worth 5000 euros, consisting of a sum of 2000 euros and a funding of 3000 euros for a research stay (in Paris for foreigners or international partners of PSL for French). Laureates will also give three seminars in three partner institutions of PSL.

The award ceremony will be held on June 12th at 6pm at the Collège de France, in the presence of Dominique Schnapper (EHESS study director), President of the PSL SHS 2019 Thesis Prize, which will give a lecture: “The Humanities and Social Sciences between scientism and politics “.
