Objectives:
- Improve the accuracy and the scientific style written in English.
- Promote your contribution to the literature in the “abstract” and the introduction of the article.
Program:
Morning
> The most frequent grammatical errors identified in scientific articles: explanations and training exercises;
> Characteristics of a good scientific style in English: brainstorming and examples;
> Writing an abstract:
– What is an abstract for? How to make it attractive?
– The structure of an abstract;
– Differentiate and value his contribution to the literature;
– Reading of some authentic abstracts written by scientists of various disciplines and analysis of their structure;
– Identify areas for improvement in one’s own abstract: practical exercise.
Afternoon
> “Peer feedback” on abstracts (highlighting his research …);
> Strategy to develop scientific style and vocabulary through active reading;
> Creation of a personalized “database”;
> Writing the introduction:
– Techniques for getting started: examples;
– Different possible structures for introduction;
– Reading and analysis of some extracts of introduction;
– How to cite the literature and locate its research;
– Exercise of application: improvement of its introduction according to the presented points.
Prerequisites:
> BEFORE THE TRAINING: Send an email to anne.roulin@psl.eu with your abstract and introduction of your article (for rereading and corrections by the teacher).
> DAY OF TRAINING: Bring your abstract and introduction to your article.
